Tourbillon – Function & History
A tourbillon groups the escapement (escape wheel/pallet) and balance in a rotating cage that typically turns once per minute. By constantly changing position, positional and center-of-gravity errors are averaged out, helping to stabilize rate performance. Invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet and patented in 1801 (Paris), the tourbillon ranks—alongside the minute repeater—among the most complex haute horlogerie complications.
