The Fascination of the Tourbillon

The Tourbillon (French for “whirlwind”) was invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet to counteract the effects of gravity on a watch’s accuracy. In this mechanism, the balance wheel, anchor, and escape wheel are mounted in a rotating cage that turns once per minute. This continuous rotation averages out positional errors, resulting in exceptional precision and a captivating visual spectacle.
