The tourbillon – function & heritage (brief)
The tourbillon combines the escapement (escape wheel/anchor) and balance in a rotating cage that typically turns once per minute. This continuous rotation averages out positional and center-of-gravity errors, helping reduce rate deviations. Invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the tourbillon ranks—alongside the minute repeater—among the most demanding complications in mechanical watchmaking.
