Red Star ST5 – One of the Most Important Chinese Collector's Watches
Some watches do more than simply tell the time – they tell a story. The Red Star ST5 is one of those extraordinary timepieces. At its heart beats the legendary Seagull ST5, the very first fully designed and manufactured mechanical movement developed entirely in China. Among Chinese collectors, this historic caliber enjoys a status comparable to the early masterpieces from Switzerland or Glashütte.
During the 1960s, China set out to create its own entirely domestic mechanical watch movement. The result was the ST5, developed and manufactured by the Tianjin Watch Factory using exclusively Chinese engineering, machinery and expertise. It marked the beginning of China's independent mechanical watch industry and remains one of its greatest horological achievements.
Only a Small Number of Original Movements Survived
When quartz watches conquered the market, production of the ST5 came to an end. Most movements were scrapped or disappeared over the decades. Determined to preserve this important piece of Chinese watchmaking history, my long-time friend Thomas Leung, owner of Red Star, spent many years searching throughout China for the remaining original ST5 movements.
Approximately 1,200 historic movements were eventually located. However, only around 300 were suitable for complete restoration. Each movement was carefully disassembled, cleaned, serviced, lubricated, regulated and rebuilt by hand. These restored original movements now power this remarkable collector's watch.
Personally Visited Red Star and Seagull
In April 2025, I had the privilege of visiting both Red Star in Shenzhen and Seagull in Tianjin. During my journey I toured the factories, witnessed modern production, explored the history of these historic calibers and enjoyed many fascinating conversations with the people behind these exceptional watches.

Authentic Vintage Military Design
The 39 mm stainless steel case faithfully reflects the design language of Chinese military and service watches from the 1960s. Its finely brushed finish, highly domed mineral crystal and black vintage-style dial create an authentic historical appearance.
Particularly distinctive are the classic cathedral-style hands and the red star positioned below 12 o'clock, preserving the unmistakable character of the original design. Every watch also features its own individual serial number engraved on the beautifully decorated case back.
