The Russian watch factory Vostok (Russian Восток "East", "Orient") was founded in 1942 by order of Josef Stalin and is located today in the city of Chistopol 800 km east of Moscow. It became necessary to relocate the Second Moscow Watch Factory in the course of the Second World War due to advancing Wehrmacht troops.

Since then, Vostok has been one of the official suppliers of the Russian and former Soviet Army. After the end of the Second World War wristwatches were manufactured in addition to clocks for aircraft, tanks and submarines. Until recently, however, these were only available in special stores exclusively for military personnel.

The best-known models are the Vostok Komandirskije (German: Commander), which has been produced since 1962, and the Vostok   since 1968, which were mainly delivered as wristwatches for men to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Corresponding models bear the mark "ЗАКАЗ МО СССР" on the dial.
