The tourbillon – brief function & heritage
In a tourbillon, the balance, anchor and escape wheel rotate inside a small cage—typically once per minute. This continuous rotation averages out positional and center-of-gravity errors, helping reduce rate deviation. Invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the tourbillon ranks—alongside the minute repeater—among the most demanding complications in mechanical watchmaking.
