A Journey Through Chinese Watchmaking – Inside Seagull & Red Star
In April 2025, I had the special opportunity to visit two of China’s most renowned watch manufacturers: Seagull in Tianjin and Red Star in Shenzhen. As the owner of Poljot24.de for over 30 years, this was a truly fascinating journey into the world of mechanical watchmaking – from raw movements to fully finished timepieces.
Seagull in Tianjin – Where Movements Are Born
Since 1955, Seagull has been producing high-quality mechanical watch movements and is now among the world’s largest manufacturers. During my visit to Tianjin, I had the chance to explore both the in-house watch museum and the state-of-the-art production facilities.
Historical Legacy:
-
China’s first mechanical wristwatch (1955) – "Wuyi"
-
1963 pilot’s chronograph for the Chinese Air Force
Modern Manufacturing:
-
Fully automated CNC milling machines for producing movement plates
-
Manual assembly in sterile environments by skilled watchmakers
-
A blend of precision engineering and traditional craftsmanship

Red Star in Shenzhen – Watches with Character
Red Star builds on Seagull movements to create elegant, high-quality mechanical watches. During my visit, I not only saw exciting new models and participated in design discussions, but also got a deep look into the production and finishing process.
Design and Innovation:
-
Models with moonphase, big date, multi-calendar
-
Creative and bold design ideas
-
Attention to detail in hands, cases, and dials
Production Process:
-
Movement assembly and adjustment by experienced watchmakers (led by Master Wong)
-
Finishing of Seagull calibers like the ST19 with blued screws and intricate engravings
-
Quality control, ISO9001 standards, and water resistance testing
Photos show: design meeting with Red Star, new watch models, watchmakers at work, myself helping with inspections, and a group photo with the team.
Passion for Mechanical Masterpieces
What impressed me the most was the dedication of the staff, the precision in every step, and the genuine passion for mechanical timepieces. At both Seagull and Red Star, you can feel the love for detail and the pursuit of quality.
This journey reaffirmed my belief: Chinese mechanical watches are now on par with European manufacturers – in both technology and design.
I’m proud to offer these watches in my online shop in the rubric Seagull and Red Star watches – with a deep appreciation for everything behind them.
