Heritage – The Cosmonaut’s Watch

The Strela chronographs are among the most iconic watches ever made in Russia. Produced in Moscow by Poljot from the 1950s onwards, they became inseparably linked to the history of Soviet space exploration.

  • On June 12, 1965, cosmonaut Alexei Leonov wore a Strela during the world’s first spacewalk (EVA) – making the Strela a true cosmonaut’s watch.

  • Other Soviet cosmonauts such as Pavel Belyayev and Yuri Gagarin (who also wore Poljot watches) made the Strela famous around the globe.

  • The original models were equipped with the Venus 3017 column-wheel caliber, valued for its precision, reliability, and robustness – crucial qualities in the harsh environment of space.

The new Strela Cosmos CO40CYB carries this legacy into the present day, staying true to the design and spirit of the originals.

The Movement – ST19 Column-Wheel Caliber

At the heart of this chronograph beats the ST19 hand-wound column-wheel movement – a direct successor to the historic Venus 3017 that powered the first Strela chronographs.

  • Column-wheel chronograph mechanism – a hallmark of fine watchmaking

  • Manual winding, approx. 40 hours power reserve

  • 21 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, shock protected

  • Engraving “3017 → ST19” on the caseback as a tribute to the original

The ST19 is manufactured by Seagull in Tianjin, one of the largest watchmakers in the world, which continues to produce this caliber based on the original Venus blueprints. Renowned for its precision, reliability, and longevity, it preserves the mechanical tradition of the legendary Venus 3017.

Authentic Design

  • Black dial with green Superluminova hands and indices

  • Tachymeter & telemeter scale as on the historical model

  • Vintage-style baguette pushers

  • Case design faithful to the original, with brushed sides and polished accents

Conclusion

The Strela Chronograph Cosmos CO40CYB is more than just a watch – it is a piece of space history for your wrist. With its historic column-wheel ST19 movement, authentic vintage design, and excellent craftsmanship, it combines Russian watchmaking heritage with cosmonaut legacy.
