Heritage – The Cosmonauts’ Watch

Strela chronographs are among the best-known Russian watches. Produced from the 1950s by Poljot in Moscow, they are closely linked to the Soviet space program.

  • On 18 March 1965, Alexei Leonov wore a Strela during the first spacewalk — making Strela the cosmonauts’ watch.
  • Other Soviet cosmonauts such as Pavel Belyayev and Yuri Gagarin (who also wore Poljot watches) helped make Strela famous worldwide.
  • The watches earned their reputation thanks to the robust Venus 3017 column-wheel calibre, clear legibility and high reliability — crucial in space.

The new Strela LTR40CYM continues this tradition and brings the fascination of the space age back to the wrist.

The Movement – ST19 Column-Wheel

At the heart of the watch is the ST19 column-wheel movement — a direct successor to the historic Venus 3017 used in the first Strela chronographs.

  • Column-wheel control like the original — a hallmark of fine chronographs
  • Hand-wound with approx. 40 hours power reserve
  • 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, shock-protected
  • Caseback engraving “3017 → ST19” as a tribute to the movement’s lineage

The ST19 is manufactured by Sea-Gull in Tianjin — one of the world’s largest watchmakers — following the original Venus construction plans. It is regarded as highly accurate, robust and durable, preserving the technical tradition of the famed Venus 3017.

Design in Historic Style

  • Classic beige dial with gold numerals, indices and hands — Cyrillic script
  • Classic baguette-style chronograph pushers
  • Case in vintage look, crafted with polished and brushed surfaces

Conclusion

The Strela Chronograph LTR40CYM is more than just a watch — it is a piece of space history for the wrist. With its time-honoured ST19 column-wheel movement, faithful design and high-quality finishing, it unites Russian watchmaking and cosmic heritage.
