The Poljot 3133 – History & Highlights of a Legendary Russian Chronograph Movement

The Poljot 3133 is one of the most recognized and reliable chronograph movements from Russian production – with a captivating history that traces back to Switzerland.

Swiss Origins – Russian Engineering:

In the early 1970s, the Soviet Union acquired the production equipment for the Swiss Valjoux 7734 chronograph caliber, which was being phased out due to the quartz revolution in Europe. The machinery was transferred to the First Moscow Watch Factory (Poljot), where it was technically improved and modernized.

By 1976, full-scale production of the Poljot 3133 began – now with several key upgrades:

  • Increased beat rate: 21,600 vs. 18,000 vibrations per hour

  • Enhanced shock protection

  • Built with ruggedness in mind – ideal for demanding use in military and aviation applications

A Movement with Space Mission Credentials:

The 3133 wasn't just used in civilian watches – it also played a role in Soviet space missions. Cosmonauts wore chronographs equipped with this movement during various Soyuz flights, including the historic 1975 Soyuz–Apollo mission.

Notable Features of the 3133:

  • Manual-winding chronograph movement

  • 23 jewels, 21,600 vph, approx. 48-hour power reserve

  • Known for its durability, ease of maintenance, and robust construction

  • Relatively slim for a mechanical chronograph movement

A True Rarity Today:

Production of the Poljot 3133 ceased in the early 2000s. Existing calibers are now sourced from remaining stock – especially gold-plated and decorated versions, such as those used by Alexander Shorokhoff, are extremely rare and highly sought-after by collectors worldwide.
