With the new Red Star 747 Jumbo, Red Star pays tribute to this legendary aircraft with an extraordinary mechanical chronograph. The watch does far more than simply carry the 747 name – numerous details are directly inspired by the technology and visual language of an aircraft cockpit.

The Cockpit of a 747 on Your Wrist

One look at the dial immediately brings to mind a flight instrument. At the heart of the design is the artificial horizon, one of the essential instruments in an aircraft cockpit. Its characteristic representation of blue sky and brown earth forms the central design element of the dial.

Scales, markings and colourful details reproduce the technical aesthetics of classic cockpit instrumentation. Even a small Boeing 747 silhouette can be discovered in the centre of the dial.

Above this elaborate dial sits a domed sapphire crystal, adding impressive depth to the watch and further enhancing its distinctive instrument-like appearance.

Even the Chronograph Pushers Are Inspired by Jet Engines

A particularly attractive detail can be found on the right-hand side of the case: the two chronograph pushers are designed to evoke the turbines of a jet engine.

The brushed stainless steel case measures 42 mm in diameter and, at 16 mm in height, has a deliberately substantial presence on the wrist. A lug-to-lug measurement of 52 mm further emphasises the technical, instrument-inspired character of the 747 Jumbo.

Completing the design is a modern grey rubber strap, perfectly matched to the colours and aviation theme of the watch.

Peacock SL4609 – An Unusual Mechanical Heart

At least as fascinating as the design of the watch is the movement inside.

The Red Star 747 Jumbo is powered by the rarely encountered Peacock SL4609, a mechanical chronograph calibre whose construction follows the well-known architecture of the ETA/Valjoux 7750.

For the Red Star 747 Jumbo, however, a particularly interesting version is used: the calibre has been configured as a manual-winding movement. Instead of relying on an automatic rotor, the watch is wound in the traditional way using the crown – a detail that perfectly complements the technical and mechanical character of this model.

The movement features 33 jewels and operates at a high frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). With second stop if you pull out the crown.

This frequency can also be appreciated when the chronograph is running: the central chronograph seconds hand advances across the dial in rapid, fine steps. For enthusiasts of mechanical watchmaking, this is a particularly fascinating detail.

The SL4609 therefore makes the 747 Jumbo much more than an unusually designed aviation watch. Beneath its cockpit-inspired dial beats a genuine mechanical hand-wound chronograph with a technically fascinating and relatively uncommon calibre architecture.
